The Emergency Ultrasound fellowship is a one-year program. Fellows have full faculty status at Mount Sinai. It is expected that each fellow will gain significant clinical experience in ultrasound (including approximately one thousand ultrasound scans), develop a portfolio of ultrasound lectures and teaching experience, and complete a scholarly project. Although no perfect credentialing or certification process for emergency physicians exists at this time, each fellow will complete the requirements for the RDMS certification.

Components of the curriculum include:

Clinical

  • Clinical shifts as full faculty at Mount Sinai Hospital and Elmhurst Hospital Center
  • Work in cutting-edge trauma and medical resuscitation areas, Level I trauma center, stroke center, and a world-renowned cardiac and transplant center of excellence
  • Supervise residents from the Mount Sinai EM residency program

Research

  • Participate in one of several multicenter ultrasound studies
  • Ultrasound research has involved partnerships with the departments of Anatomy, Obstetrics, EMS, Informatics, and Cardiology
  • Strong faculty and resident interest in participating in ultrasound projects
  • Sinai’s research director has won several NIH R-01 grants, and a strong ongoing clinical research program exists in the department, including:
    • Full-time grant writer
    • Statistician on faculty
    • Research associates in the department
  • A nationally recognized medical informatics department and ‘paperless’ electronic charting system supports many types of research

Education

  • Significant ‘one on one’ time with the fellowship director and faculty
  • Journal club with residents to discuss the latest literature
  • Review material for RDMS exam
  • Off-service experiences include the vascular laboratory, echocardiography suite, and general abdominal sonography
  • Significant teaching opportunities exist for the fellows, including:
    • Introductory ultrasound course for incoming interns
    • Annual ultrasound CME conference at Mount Sinai
    • Annual CME conference in Ponte Vedra, Florida
    • Resident lectures on ultrasound
    • Monthly ultrasound rotation for EM interns and medical students
    • Ultrasound and clinical correlates course for first-year medical students

Administration

  • Take part in faculty credentialing program
  • Participate in financial program (budget, billing, etc.)
  • Assist in ongoing quality assurance program (scan review, education, etc.)
  • Build the skills and experience necessary to run an ultrasound program
