INTRODUCTION TO EMERGENCY ULTRASOUND

This two-week rotation introduces students to bedside ultrasound as it is used in the emergency department. Students will take part in didactics with the directors of emergency ultrasound at Mount Sinai Hospital and Elmhurst Hospital Center.
Topics will include diagnostic ultrasound of the heart, aorta, kidneys, uterus, gallbladder and trauma exams as utilized by emergency physicians. In addition, topics on procedure guidance using ultrasound (venous access, paracentesis, etc.) will be covered. In addition to didactic time, there will be a significant amount of time devoted to hands-on scanning sessions where the techniques of bedside diagnostic scanning will be reinforced.
Attendance is expected at all didactic sessions, as well as scheduled scanning sessions. Attendance at the Emergency Medicine resident conference on Wednesday is optional. Evaluations are based on clinical performance, written examination and a case write-up illustrating the use of bedside ultrasound in a clinical scenario. (Credit Hours: 2 weeks)
